Hello! I’m Jaime Brockway, your resident expert copy editor, line editor, and proofreader.

I’ve collaborated with companies including Atlantic Brand Partners, Tablet magazine, and Well+Good, as well as other magazines, startups, nonprofits, and book authors.

Here on Medium, I share my insider perspective as a longtime editor to benefit authors, writers, and content/editorial managers.

I'll take you behind the scenes of my work and bring clarity to the process of collaborating with an editor. Hopefully, by gaining these insights, you’ll form a solid idea of what to expect from an editor. And you won't accept anything less.

Here’s the photo my youngest sister took of me at my 30th birthday party in Brooklyn. It’s the best nice photo I have of myself, and I use it for everything.

My Journey as a Freelance Editor

I’ve been a professional editor since 2014, when I moved to NYC without a job because I wanted to work in the publishing capital of the world.

Soon I was freelancing for The Wall Street Journal Magazine and various Hearst magazines. Then I began working full-time job as a copy editor at the weekly print magazine Time Out New York. In two years, I worked my way up to national copy chief.

In January 2018, I went freelance full-time, and I never looked back! (Check out this 10-minute video I recorded about my journey from college graduate to freelance editor.)

I even took my laptop abroad and worked remotely while backpacking through Latin America for two years.

Here’s a photo series of how my "office" changed from the beginning to end of 2018:

Time Out offices in Times Square

Brooklyn cafés

Airbnbs and hostels

Now my laptop and I are stateside, working from various spots around the country.
